South Dakota Waterfowl Hunts Prairie Pothole
The prairie pothole region of the Dakotas is an important breeding area for the Central Flyway. In addition the Glacial Lakes region of northeast South Dakota provides staging areas for thousands of northern birds on their fall migration.
Equipment & Scouting
Dakota Outdoorsman provides all of the expertise and equipment to make your waterfowl hunt successful. We scout out several areas daily to provide the best opportunity for harvesting birds. Our experienced guides will set up all decoys and equipment and call the birds in close. The shooting is up to you!
We offer field and water hunts depending upon species, number of hunters in a party, timing, and availability of birds.
Season Dates
Our season begins in early September for the resident Giant Canada Goose Season. This season allows increased bag limits and increased non-resident licenses for the plentiful Giant Canadians.
In late September our regular waterfowl season starts. Resident dabbling ducks such as mallards, pintails, teal, and gadwalls join the Canada Geese in a mixed bag. Migrations of diving ducks such as bluebills, redheads, ringbills, goldeneyes, canvasbacks, and buffle heads congregate on lakes in the region.
Later in the season northern mallards, snow geese, and tundra swans stage in the area. Non-residents must apply early for a limited number of licenses. You may apply online at the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks web site.
